ALBANY, NY — Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announces that $20 million in new state funding is available for airports across New York State to support safety improvements, modernize operations and increase general and business-related aviation capacity. The Airport Capital Grant Program, which is 100 percent state-funded, is part of the state's $275-billion infrastructure program, the largest building program of its kind in the nation. The announcement also comes on the heels of the recent completion of the modernization and expansion of the Ithaca Tompkins International Airport.

"There is no second chance to make a first impression, and airports often serve as the gateway welcoming visitors to communities across New York," Cuomo said. "Investing in the modernization of our airports sends a strong message across the world that the Empire State is a premier destination for travelers and a great place to do business."

This funding available through the Airport Capital Grant Program is in addition to and complements the $200 million Cuomo made available through the Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization competition. Through that competition, transformational projects have been completed that enhance the customer experience; expand terminal facilities; and provide transportation hubs connecting visitors from around the world, including the Plattsburgh International Airport; Syracuse Hancock International Airport; Elmira Corning Regional Airport; and the Greater Rochester International Airport. A project is also nearing completion at the Albany International Airport.

"For decades our upstate infrastructure and communities were left to decay," said New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez. "Under Governor Cuomo's leadership, New York is reestablishing upstate as a gateway to global commerce and tourism. These grants will allow communities across our state further enhance their economic competitiveness."

The Aviation Capital Grant Program is open to public-use airports listed in the 2018 State Airport System Plan. Eligible project activities include safety projects, preservation projects, new construction, and other projects that enhance business development and economic competitiveness. Projects will be selected through a competitive solicitation process and rated based on established criteria including economic benefits for surrounding communities and businesses; adherence to regional economic development plans; and improved operational efficiency. Previous grant awards have funded new airport hangars, airport terminal building renovations, taxiway resurfacing, security fencing, and fuel farm modernizations that improve security and spill prevention.

The New York State Department of Transportation will be accepting applications for this funding opportunity through Monday, May 4.
