Burns & McDonnell Projects Supporting Stormwater Control Measures and Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Win ACEC Awards

KANSAS CITY, KS — The American Council of Engineering Companies of Kansas has awarded Burns & McDonnell two engineering excellence awards for the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) Stormwater Control Measure Manual and the Kansas National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Plan.

“Both projects demonstrate the success of a long-term relationship between KDOT and Burns & McDonnell,” said Mike DeBacker, Vice President and Leader of the Transportation Group. “Our commitment to their success and innovation through collaboration has created award-winning projects.”

Stormwater Control Measure Manual
In 2019, KDOT was issued a new Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit requiring the agency to implement a stormwater management program that includes six minimum control measures. KDOT determined that for long-term success of stormwater control measures implementation in its linear projects, they needed a custom design manual that is focused on stormwater practices already familiar to roadway designers and could be feasibly maintained by KDOT staff. Burns & McDonnell worked with KDOT to develop the manual, now in use statewide.
Kansas National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Plan
To meet funding requirements of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, IKE Transportation Partners, a joint venture of Garver and Burns & McDonnell, developed a strategic statewide Transportation Electrification Program (TEP) for KDOT, oversaw the implementation of a TEP, and supported KDOT’s existing Electric Vehicle Working Groups. The Charge Up Kansas National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Plan provides a framework for developing a statewide charging network focused on designated Alternative Fuel Corridors and was developed based on extensive public engagement.
